The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is excited to announce the opening of a new Grand Challenges grant opportunity: Ending the Pandemic Threat: A Grand Challenge for Universal Influenza Vaccine Development.

This Grand Challenge is being launched during the centenary year of the 1918 flu pandemic, with the goal of identifying novel, transformative concepts that would lead to development of a truly universal flu vaccine. Such a vaccine would alleviate the need for annual seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns and would prepare the world for the next influenza pandemic. Application deadline is June 22, 2018 at 11:00 am PDT.

Grand Challenges Explorations grant opportunities

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is inviting Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) proposals for the following three challenges (application deadline is May 2, 2018):

GCE grants have already been awarded to more than 1300 researchers in more than 65 countries. Initial grants are for USD $100,000 and successful projects are eligible to receive follow-on funding of up to USD $1 million. Proposals are solicited twice a year for an expanding set of global health and development challenges. Applications are only two pages, and no preliminary data is required. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any type of organization, including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies.

  • The African Academy of Sciences (AAS), the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are partnering under the auspices of the Coalition of African Research & Innovation (CARI) to establish a post-doctoral training fellowship program, the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative (APTI). Training will be at the intramural laboratories of NIH. Application deadline is May 11, 2018.
  • The Templeton World Charity Foundation announces Round 1 of its new Global Innovations for Character Development initiative. Application deadline is June 15, 2018.
  • Magee-Women’s Research Institute in Pittsburgh is accepting applications for the $1 million Magee Prize that will be awarded at the inaugural Magee-Women’s Research Summit on Oct. 9-10, 2018, in Pittsburgh. The Prize will fund a collaborative team of scientists at Magee and elsewhere in the world whose groundbreaking research in reproductive sciences and women’s health will advance knowledge in the field and improve lives globally. A letter of intent is due by May 11, 2018 and applications for the Magee Prize are due by June 15, 2018.

NWO – Cooperation Indonesia-The Netherlands Call 2018

NWO, in close cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (RISTEKDIKTI), launches a call for proposals 2018 of the Cooperation Indonesia -The Netherlands programme. Consortia of research institutes and other organisations (both public and private) in the Netherlands and in Indonesia can apply for funding of joint research projects that focus on

i) food,
ii) water, and
iii) rule of law

Who can apply

Applications can be submitted by consortia that include:

  1. a Dutch research organisation, acting as the main applicant;
  2. an Indonesian-based research organisation;
  3. at least one other for-profit or not-for profit private and/or public matching partner to enhance the impact of research for society;
  4. a researcher awarded granting for 2018 by RISTEKDIKTI (non-compulsory but considered an added value).

For the 2018 call for proposals, a list of examples of relevant research proposals awarded in 2018 by RISTEKDIKTI can be found in Annex 1 of this call. In case of inclusion of an awarded researcher to the consortium, the awarded granting by RISTEKDIKTI can be considered as top-up funding to the NWO grant. The awarded researcher by RISTEKDIKTi  is not necessarily the consortium partner, but may also be a member of the research team.

We are pleased to make announcement of the TUMS ASAIHL Award for top researcher in medical fields from Tehran University of Medical Science (TUMS) which is worth about $ 5000.

The award shall be given to research work which has led to significant advances in the fields of health care and scientific research with demonstrated transnational benefits applied to improved patient care, specifically but not limited to the most outstanding recent contribution related to the cause, prevention or treatment of cancer, chronic diseases, cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorders.

Evaluation Metrics
The evaluation would be on scale of 100 points.

  1. The research done cooperatively by the ASAIHL member universities’ research (10 points)
  2. Researcher projects which have received funding from international organizations (20 points)
  3. Researcher/researchers’ H-index based on Scopus data (10 points)
  4. Number of papers derived from the research (10 points)
  5. Number of citations of papers derived from the research (10 points)
  6. The university professors academic degree (10 points)
  7. Researchers who have published their work in one of the TUMS Journal (10 points)
  8. Researchers who have had any educational or researcher cooperation with TUMS such as conducting joint research projects, presenting papers in the conferences held by TUMS etc (10 points)
  9. Researchers of professors who have accepted a TUMS student through shirt courses at their home universities (10 points)

The MSRT of I.R. of Iran has also agreed to award 15 partial scholarship for current Ph.D. students from ASAIHL member institutions within the framework of collaboration between Iran and ASAIHL. This partial scholarship is referred to as “Ph.D. students mobility” and MSRT will provide accommodation, medical insurance and monthly allowance for conducting research in Iran between 3 to 6 months.
